  • Thai Farm is a Nigerian company processing locally grown cassava tubers to produce high quality cassava flour for human consumption.

  • Main by-product is “siftings” – the course tailings from fine sifting process which is used by a local animal feed company in their animal feed formulation - mainly chicken feed.
  • Founded in 2006 by Asian and Nigerian shareholders, the company was acquired by Flour Mills of Nigeria plc (www.fmnplc.com) in 2012 such that the company today is proudly part of the Golden Penny family.

Project Genesis

  • In 2003, the Nigerian Government implemented numerous policies to boost the agricultural and manufacturing sectors in Nigeria through, amongst others, the use of cassava - a root plant that was already widely cultivated in Nigeria, albeit as a traditional food source by subsistence farmers.
  • In support of these policies and in pursuit of the vision set out by the company, Thai Farm International Ltd was incorporated in 2006 in Nigeria with 14 shareholders – 4 Nigerian and 10 overseas shareholders.
  • Since its founding, the company has built and commissioned a high quality cassava flour plant producing products for supply into the Nigerian staple food chain and supporting over 2,000 cassava farmers through the purchase of their cassava crops.

What is Cassava / Tapioca

The cassava or manioc (Manihot esculenta) is a woody shrub of the Euphorbiaceae (spurge family) that is extensively cultivated as an annual crop in tropical and subtroipcal regions for its edible starchy tuberous root, a major source of carbohydrate.

The cassava plant gives the highest yield of food energy per cultivated area per day among crop plants, except possibly for sugarcane. Cassava roots are very rich in starch and contain significant amounts of calcium (50 mg/100g), phosphorous (40 mg/100g) and vitamin C (25 mg/100g).
World production of cassava root was estimated to be 184 million tonnes in 2002, the majority of production is in Africa where 99.1 million tonnes were grown, 51.5 million tonnes were grown in Asia and 33.2 million tonnes in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Cassava / Tapioca Flour Uses

  • Its current main application is as a low cost extender for wheat flour produced from imported wheat in the production of:
    • Biscuits
    • Snack Foods
    • Bread
    • Cakes and other baked products
  • It can also be used for
    • Production of alcohol in beer brewing
    • Production of glue for use in cardboard manufacture
    • Production of traditional local foods
